Description

Rapid global population growth and environmental challenges demand a shift toward a resilient circular bioeconomy. Microalgae have emerged as highly efficient, self-contained photosynthetic biofactories capable of converting sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide into primary and secondary metabolites with immense industrial value. This presentation explores the multifaceted metabolic potential of microalgae, showcasing their capacity to yield high-quality protein fractions, vital marine omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, and powerful high-value pigments such as astaxanthin, beta-carotene, and fucoxanthin. Maximizing the yield of these target metabolites requires balancing cultivation strategies and innovative engineering. We highlight the comparative dynamics between scalable open ponds and closed photobioreactors, demonstrating how controlled microenvironments unlock superior metabolic control. Moving beyond traditional axenic monocultures, this talk introduces a new paradigm in microalgae biotechnology: engineering deliberate microalgae-bacterial consortia within the phycosphere. By establishing functional synergies—such as co-cultivation with lactic acid bacteria—we can accelerate biological growth, improve nutritional attributes, and biologically remove the unpleasant sensory off-flavors historically associated with algal food products. To bridge production and application, we discuss the evolution of downstream processing from toxic conventional solvents toward eco-friendly green extraction technologies like Ultrasound Assisted Extraction (UAE) and Supercritical Fluid Extraction (SFE). These innovations secure clean, high-purity bioactive recoveries without thermal or chemical degradation. Finally, we demonstrate the versatile applications of these refined microalgal products across diverse sectors, including functional foods, clean-label coloring agents, and immunity-boosting aquaculture feeds. Ultimately, this framework addresses critical production hurdles to establish a comprehensive, closed-loop operating system aligning with global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
