Description
Football is a dynamic team sport that requires players to rapidly adapt to changing game conditions, anticipate one another's actions, and coordinate their individual behaviors in alignment with the team's shared goals. Within this framework, communication encompasses not merely the verbal exchange of messages between players but also cognitive and interactive processes—such as the construction of shared game knowledge, the similar perception of game situations, and the anticipation of teammates' potential actions. Research on football indicates that shared knowledge and shared mental models are linked to team coordination; furthermore, the development of shared game knowledge among players during collective training can alter the need for real-time verbal communication. Regarding defensive organization, processes such as positioning, space sharing, marking, pressing, and adjusting behavior based on a teammate's movements highlight the collective nature of defensive action, which relies on coordination among players. This study aims to conceptually examine communication among defenders in Scandinavian football within the context of defensive organization. Communication in this study will not be limited to verbal message exchanges between players but will instead be addressed within a framework comprising verbal and non-verbal interaction, shared game knowledge, shared situational awareness, and player coordination. Accordingly, the study seeks to discuss—based on relevant literature—the relationship between the necessity for collective action among defenders and intra-team communication processes within the context of Scandinavian football (encompassing Denmark, Norway, and Sweden). Designed as a conceptual study based on a literature review, this work aims to establish an interdisciplinary platform for discussing the defensive organization of football—evaluating it not merely through tactical and physical elements, but also through the processes of communication and the co-construction of meaning among players.
