Description

This study investigates the antioxidant and antimicrobial potential of the methanol extract (ME) obtained from Bornmuellera cappadocica (Willd.) Cullen & T.R.Dudley, alongside the silver nanoparticles (BCAgNPs) green-synthesized using this botanical extract. The antioxidant activities of ME and BCAgNPs were examined by DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging methods, iron (III) reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) test, total phenolic substance (TPC), total flavonoid substance (TFC) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) values. Antimicrobial activities, agar well diffusion method and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values against six bacterial and one yeast strains were examined. According to the antioxidant analysis results, the TPC and TFC contents of the methanol extract were determined as 56.18 mg GAE/g and 22.65 mg QE/g, respectively, while these values for BCAgNPs were found to be 321.53 mg GAE/g and 102.88 mg QE/g, respectively. TAC was determined as 96.08 mg AAE/g in methanol extract and 581.65 mg AAE/g in BCAgNPs. In DPPH and ABTS analyses, the IC₅₀ values of ME were 2147.49 µg/mL and 1091.75 µg/mL, respectively, while these values for BCAgNPs were 148.98 µg/mL and 304.59 µg/mL. FRAP values were determined as 58.72 mg FeSO₄/g and 64.69 mg FeSO₄/g for ME and BCAgNPs, respectively. These results revealed that BCAgNPs exhibited higher antioxidant activity compared to ME. In antimicrobial assays, ME did not show any measurable antimicrobial activity. BCAgNPs created 12.23–16.63 mm inhibition zones against all test microorganisms, and the highest inhibition zone was determined in the Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 strain. MIC values are in the range of 0.078–0.315 mg/mL and the lowest MIC value was detected against Klebsiella pneumoniae ATCC 13883 strain. Moreover, BCAgNPs showed antifungal activity against Candida albicans ATCC 18804 with an inhibition zone of 14.56 mm and a MIC value of 0.149 mg/mL.
