Description

Effective management of university campuses requires the integration of up-to-date spatial data on physical features with descriptive information and making this information accessible to users. Particularly at universities with campuses in different locations, enabling staff and students to access accurate information quickly depends on maintaining data within an organized and queryable system. This study aims to develop an accessible and queryable campus information system supporting smart campus applications at Gümüşhane University using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and geographic information systems (GIS). The study covers the main campus of Gümüşhane University and the Kelkit, Köse, Kürtün, Şiran, and Torul campuses. UAV images acquired from all six campuses were processed to generate orthophotos. Buildings, green spaces, parking areas, roads, recreational areas, sidewalks, stairs, sports facilities, and event areas were digitized from these orthophotos. The digitized features were organized into thematic layers, while descriptive information was incorporated into attribute tables and linked to spatial data. Thus, an information system containing spatial and descriptive information on the physical components of each campus was established. As a result, a digital inventory covering the physical components and land-use characteristics of all six campuses was created. The system enables university staff and students to access, query, monitor, and visualize information about campus features on a map. The systematic integration of spatial and descriptive data reduces the need to search across multiple sources and facilitates faster access to accurate information. It also provides a basis for area calculations, analysis of facility distributions, and comparisons among campuses. By integrating UAV-based mapping with GIS-based information management, the study supports both institutional management and user access to information. The developed infrastructure can provide a foundation for campus planning, facility management, and the future development of user-oriented smart campus applications.
